The NBN (National Broadband Network) was launched in 2009 to pave the way for businesses to finally have a good broadband network. The former network, which was notoriously known for being one of the slowest in the industry, was just too much of a risk for businesses that wanted to be able to provide their customers with the type of online service that they really needed. The truth of the matter was, in order to ensure that Australian businesses could function completely in this new online world they needed to have access to the type of network that would take advantage of blazing fast internet speeds as well as reliable networks.

Among those that would benefit greatly is a company like ours - SearchWords Pty Ltd. SearchWords provides a number of services including SEO and online marketing for local business. The disadvantage with a slow internet connection is it has an incredible impact on the speedof delivery of service. Searchwords runs thousands of Google Places rank reports each week for its customers.

With the help of the NBN, we will complete our analysis quickly and more efficiently than before. In addition all companies need solid networks to be able to run Java and Flash off of their websites and customers to view this website functionality.

There are other businesses which may be seemingly offline that also need the fast connection of the NBN. Agricultural businesses for example may not seem like businesses that need network connectivity but they do. Modern day agriculture involves sending massive amounts of data to and from different locations and this transfer of data is critical. The data includes information that has to do with pricing, land monitoring as well as purchasing or even logistics. If you rely greatly on data flowing from one area to another, it's understandable then that you would want a faster connection.

Financial services also benefit greatly from the new and improved network. Financial services have often been provided face to face or using technologies such as physical fax machines and snail mail. The truth of the matter is however that new age technology has made encryption stronger, better and safer that the traditional route of pen and paper. Granted, not all systems are as secure as they can be but with the right measures in place, financial institutions can electronically, send, receive and collaborate on data.

Just like the agriculture businesses that send massive amounts of data electronically, financial institutions rely heavily on being able to transmit data throughout the day. These include not just teller functions but ATM machines and the like as well. The better the connection, the better the institution can function.

These are just some of the types of business that benefit. Check on the NBN or try to get help from trusted (and scam review verified) SearchWords for more information.

<![CDATA[Xero makes SMB bookkeeping easier than ever]]>Tue, 19 Aug 2014 01:08:13 GMThttp://www.searchwords.com.au/blog/xero-makes-smb-bookkeeping-easier-than-everPicture
In order for a business to stay afloat it’s important to ensure that the flow of money is aligned with their needs. Accounting for your finances allows you to see where your money is coming from and where it is going. The principles of accounting are based on ensuring that your profits, costs and expenses are equal. What started as a process based on paper ledgers and spreadsheets eventually morphed into one with computer based spreadsheet ones.

As the internet became more and more prominent and as applications in browsers and online capabilities increased, it became even easier to send and receive spreadsheets. Even with this ease though, the process was not without problems. Files are volatile and although in general, plenty of spreadsheets are compatible with each other, this didn’t stop the occasional compatibility issues and of course, as Murphy’s Law would have it, it’s always the huge file you end up having problems with.

Other than the corrupt file issues, it is also difficult to access spreadsheets off your PC. You had to be at the same PC or have a means to save the file you were editing. If you went on holiday without your computer, there was no way to access this file but to send it to yourself. In addition, sending it to your email still meant you had to save it somewhere, work on it again and then resend it to yourself. All seemingly simple things to do but add all that time up together and you’ll find that it still consumes time.

Thankfully, there is a solution. One of the best solutions available in the market is Xero, an online accounting application that is so powerful, it allows you to do everything you need to in simple clicks and all changes are saved on the Cloud. Whether you are talking about personal finances or business finances, management becomes easier with the help of Xero. Companies like Searchwords PTY Ltd swear by the capabilities of Xero. Not only has Xero undergone a scam review, but it has been put into extensive testing by the Search Words group.

Xero gives you the capability to create new invoices but it also gives you the capabilities to save draft invoices and even quotes. You have the capability to create an extensive inventory list onto which you can add descriptions, taxes and even discount items. The way that Xero works, you have the ability to add accounts and details for your clients, for those you owe money too and you can even set up recurring payments for those who owe you money or those you owe money to.

Ultimately, you can find all the things you need to do as far as accounting is concerned and in an easy to use and reliable online application. Xero allows you to stay on top of all your cash flow and even gives you the capability to integrate your ledgers with your bank account so you can automatically receive and send payments and your Xero account will always be updated.

<![CDATA[Yellowpages. An impending death?]]>Tue, 16 Apr 2013 02:10:03 GMThttp://www.searchwords.com.au/blog/yellowpages-an-impending-deathPicture
A colleague sends my this image last week. It's a photo taken from a Yellowpages edition dumped on his doorstep. You need to look closely to see what's so interesting.

Picture
Notice the fillers (grey lines) where businesses used to list
At Searchwords, we visit thousands of businesses a week that are absolutely fed up with paying exorbitant advertising rates to the Yellowpages. It seems the Yellowpages staff don't even believe in the products they're promoting, obvious as they just dump a bulk of editions in the foyer of the building - they don't even deliver it to your business anymore!

If Yellowpages doesn't bother distributing their product properly, what chance does the advertiser have of getting any valuable return on their investment?

None, it seems - proven by the increase in vacancies in the edition. The book has now resorted to filling the blank spaces with filler, that's right. Grey lines! You'd think they could at least enlarge everyone's listing to help in filling the voids.

If you want to see what Australian's really think about the Yellowpages, see the video we put together earlier this year. It says it all!

<![CDATA[Small Business Tricks: Sim Gateways Save you $$]]>Tue, 16 Apr 2013 02:00:13 GMThttp://www.searchwords.com.au/blog/small-business-tricks-sim-gateways-save-youPicture
Calls to mobile phones are much more expensive than calls to landline phones. Although standard rates vary, one thing is for sure, you will always end up spending more on your mobile charges than you will for your landline charges. A SIM Gateway helps to lessen this cost by allowing you to connect SIM cards to your company’ PBX. What this does is allow you to use the actual mobile phone network when making calls via your company network. In effect therefore what you are actually doing is creating a network that allows you to call with mobile to mobile phone rates rather than landline to mobile rates.

There are a multitude of different SIM Gateways that you can use and the number of SIM cards that you can use with each one also varies. Some SIM Gateways allow 24 channels for example allow 32 or 16. That indicates the number of SIM cards that you can actually use with the SIM Gateway. This means that you can effectively use your phone line to create an additional set of 24 numbers. This is much more affordable than actually adding 24 lines to your actual phone line.

Something that you also have to know when it comes to SIM Gateways is that the usage is capped. The advantage to using a capped line is obvious is you are thinking of cost of course. Since the usage is capped, it means that you can effectively control the money you are spending while still enjoying the benefits of the service. This is especially useful if you are trying to work within a fixed budget because it allows you to stick within that fixed budget.

Calls aren’t the only way that you can save money on your bill with a SIM Gateway though. Since SIMs can be used to send SMS messages, you can effectively save money there too because text messages are much cheaper to send than making phone calls. On a separate note, the good thing about text messages is also that you have proof of conversations right off the bat rather than having to record what you are saying.

Ultimately, if your goal is to save money then a SIM Gateway will be one of the best things you can get to save money. Make sure you try the product from trusted manufacturers.

Sounds like Dropbox is for you.

Dropbox means that you can work from anywhere and access your files. To access the file, all you need to do is click on the Dropbox icon and select the file.

You can use Dropbox from your desktop or laptop and you can sync it with all your devices including tablets, iPods, iPhones, Androids and Blackberries.

Making changes to your files is easy. When you save the file all the changes are saved live. It means that you can co-write a document or collaborate with a colleague. It makes sharing easy!

Adding files is also simple. To start a new project, all you need to do is create a new file and then add the content. As soon as the files have uploaded to Dropbox you can work on them or invite others to share access to the files. Once they are uploaded and synced in Dropbox you can access the files whether online or offline. To add content to an existing project it is as simple as dragging and dropping the file.

Dropbox offers a great solution to share a completed job with a customer. It saves you having to burn it to CD/DVD and send by post. Your customers can now have exclusive access to the file within the touch of a button. Your customers don’t need to have Dropbox to share the file; they can simply click on the link.

Dropbox is also secure. It means that no one can crash your party to remove, edit and hack your files. Only the people who you have invited to share to files will have access to them.

Dropbox is great for small business. It offers a solution that can even be free. You can create an account for free and upload up to 2GB of files. This is plenty for many small businesses. You can even get more space by inviting others to Dropbox. At Searchwords we love using Dropbox between staff members, our sales teams and technical team. It just makes sense to use something that is simple, low cost and effective.

<![CDATA[Small Business Tricks: 5 Ways to Recruit Great Staff for Free]]>Thu, 14 Feb 2013 01:57:14 GMThttp://www.searchwords.com.au/blog/-5-ways-to-recruit-for-freeAll businesses need to recruit. It may be to fill a void as a business expands or takes on a new direction or it could be to replace an existing staff member.

Finding the right candidate to fill a role can be time consuming and expensive. An average online advertisement in Australia’s largest online job board costs $247.50 and there is no guarantee of finding a quality candidate.

There are many options to finding your new starter. You don’t need to pay hundreds of dollars in fact you don’t necessarily need to spend a cent.

Here are a few suggestions that won’t cost you a thing.
1) Gumtree www.gumtree.com.au/
Gumtree is an online community site that allows you to buy, sell and advertise products and services. It is like an online Trading Post or classifieds. You can select an industry that is relevant, write your advert and even add images to attract attention. Then it is a matter of watching the applications roll into your inbox and creating a shortlist.

2) Internships Programs
Ever considered taking on a tertiary student as an intern? They are well educated and ready to put their skills into practice. Interns are available at no cost to the employer. Potential interns will learn about your company from an online profile that includes a job description. Once matched you will have a chance to meet and interview the intern. What’s the catch? You do need to have the time to train the intern. You get a free recruit in exchange for mentoring them and giving them experience.

Most universities have an internship program. Some examples include

http://studentinternships.com.au/

http://www.performanceeducation.com.au/

3) Linkedin http://www.linkedin.com
LinkedIn is an online professional network. While you can place a paid advertisement for candidates on LinkedIn you can also use LinkedIn to headhunt and contact people with relevant skills. Once you have found a person with the right skill set you can get in touch with them to see if they are interested in an opportunity in your business.

4) Ask your customers
Now this one sounds obvious BUT have you ever even tried? Put a sign in your window and ask your customers if they are looking for work or know anyone who they think would be suitable. Sometimes the best candidates are people you already know. Not only do they have a basic understanding of your business but you “know” them even if it is only a little. Any inside information about whom you are hiring is a huge advantage for an employer.

5) Facebook/Twitter
Facebook and Twitter are a great way to tell people who are already interested in your business that you are looking for staff. After all they already “like” or “follow” your company and will have some brand loyalty. You can also encourage your Facebook fans or Twitter followers to share or re-tweet that you are looking for a new team member to get the word out even further.

Recruitment doesn’t need to be expensive to be successful. Casting the net widely means that you will get a more diverse group of applicants. The old adage ‘you don’t get something for nothing’ certainly doesn’t need to apply with recruitment.
